Why the mask?
In my TikTok, I wear a mask:
Every single video, inevitably, people are like “TAKE OFF THE MASK” or “WHY THE MASK?!”
There are 3 reasons.
Reason 1: Job security
There’s been plenty of folks that have gotten fired just by having a Tik Tok. Their content could be 100% innocuous, but their company just fires them as soon as they find out that they have a social media account.
A good example is Tech Lead, who got fired for having a YouTube channel. Not about any content specifically—just by having a channel.
Seeing as how I make next to nothing with my Tik Tok, it doesn’t make sense to sacrifice my job just so I can build a ‘personal brand.’
Reason 2: Building to sell
I don’t want a personal brand because I’d like the optionality to sell companies I build. So if I have a strong social media presence and a company would like to pay me to get sell it to them, I can.
If I didn’t have the mask and I was someone like Mr. Beast, I simply cannot sell the company. If Mr. Beast sells his channels, his channels is no longer Mr. Beast. Mr. Beast without Jimmy as a host would just be weird.
But in a hypothetical case where I build my SaaSes to be a $100 million business and I’d like to work on something else, I can. The new company just needs to be able to afford a shirt to wrap around someone’s head and BAM they’ve got a new spokesperson.
Other words, I want my character on Tik Tok to be akin to the Stig in Top Gear, where I am completely interchangeable.
Reason 3: My shirts are cool
TBH my shirts are cool and I love the graphics on my shirts. That’s why I buy ‘em or make ‘em. So putting them on my face is a fun way to show off my shirts.
